Prisoner John MURPHY 1875

John Murphy was photographed by T. J. Nevin on arrival at the Hobart Gaol, February 1875.

A paper copy, held at the Archives Office of Tasmania, was produced in the 1970s from Nevin's 1875 sepia cdv of John Murphy. It was originally accessioned at the QVMAG Launceston from the estate of convictaria collector John Watt Beattie in the 1930s. The QVMAG cdv was numbered "151" on the mount under the image for removal from the QVMAG for the Port Arthur Development Project exhibition in 1983-84. The NLA copy was acquired from Tasmanian government estrays and donated to the NLA in the 1960s by Dr. Neil Gunson.

POLICE RECORDS



John Murphy per Blenheim 2 was convicted of larceny at Deloraine, Tasmania, sentenced to 9 months and transferred to the Hobart Gaol where government contractor Thomas J. Nevin photographed him on being received in the week ending 27 February 1875.
