Photographer Thomas J. Nevin was well known to the readers of the Mercury, the Hobart newspaper apart from the usual trade advertisements for his services and the notices inserted on the occasion of births, deaths and marriages within his family. He reproduced the front page of the 23 December 1874 issue as a card measuring 3x2 inches, which was reported in an article on 25 December 1874:

A PHOTOGRAPHIC FEAT. - Mr T. J. Nevin, of Elizabeth-street, has performed a feat in photography which may be justly regarded as a literary curiosity. He has succeeded in legibly producing the front page of The Mercury of Wednesday, the 23 inst., on a card three inches by two inches. Many of the advertisements could be read without the aid of a glass, and the seven columns admit of a margin all round the card.

Above: the front page of the Mercury, 23 December 1874

Thomas J. Nevin was actively involved in providing the press with photographs for display in their street-front windows from ca. 1872. Furnishing details to reporters of events and exhibitions at the Hobart Town Hall was another aspect of his job as Office and Hall Keeper there from the mid-1870s. And when Thomas Nevin was dismissed from the Town Hall position supposedly for inebriation in December 1880, the Mercury ran a series of short notices and a detailed account of the whole incident into January 1881.

Above: The GHOST incident again: this notice in the Mercury, 26 December 1880 took pains to stress that Thomas Nevin was discharged from the HCC for drunkenness and not for pretending to be a ghost on the night of December 3, 1880. The "coward", i.e. the ghost, was probably Edwin Midwood, Nevin's colleague who was the Information Officer for the Hobart City Corporation at the Town Hall.

The STILWELL INDEX

G.T. Stilwell, Mercury photo 1970s[?]

Researchers are indebted to the late G.T. Stilwell for his creation of the Stilwell Index during his service at the State Library of Tasmania. G.T. Stilwell also published a short biography of Thomas Nevin with Joan S. Kerr outlining the Town Hall dismissal and the misattribution in the 1980s by amateur historian Chris Long of T. J. Nevin's convict portraiture to the non-photographer commandant of the Port Arthur prison, A.H. Boyd in the mammoth publication, The Dictionary of Australian Artists: painters, sketchers, photographers and engravers to 1870, edited by Joan Kerr. (Melbourne: Oxford University Press 1992).

There are four entries for Thomas J. Nevin in the Stilwell Index, the State Library of Tasmania's TALIS Catalogue for the Tasmanian Index (Newspapers & Journals), now defunct (as at 2022):
