CRIMINAL JURISDICTION. THURSDAY, 16TH OCTOBER, 1867. (Before His Honor Sir-Francis Smith, Knight, Puisne Judge.)
MURDER. Ephraim Doe and Bridget Doe were charged with having on the 14th of August last, at Mountain Vale, near Bishopsbourne, wilfully and maliciously murdered one John Harris. The Attorney-General prosecuted. Mr. Rocher, sen., for Ephraim Doe, and Mr. Rocher, jun., for Bridget Doe. Prisoners pleaded not guilty. The particulars of this case were fully given in our columns, in connection with the coroner's inquest. The jury retired at 4.40 p.m., and returned into Court at a quarter to six with a verdict of " guilty of manslaughter" against Ephraim Doe, and a verdict of " not guilty" in the case of Bridget Doe. His Honor sentenced the prisoner to fifteen years imprisonment.

Prisoner Ephraim Doe per ship Layton 3 was sentenced to 15 years for manslaughter at the Supreme Court Launceston on 17 October 1867. He was 67 years old, 5ft 5ins tall, with grey hair. He had the letter "E" on his right wrist. Ephraim Doe received a conditional pardon (CP) and was photographed by T. J. Nevin on discharge in the week ending 18 March 1874.

The phrase "Taken at Port Arthur 1874" is misinformation inscribed on the verso in the late 1890s -1900s for display and exhibition of Tasmania's penal heritage in the name of tourism at John Watt Beattie's convictaria museum in Hobart.
